Self-care Skills

Self-care skills refer to day to day activities that a child encounters and manages. As a new born, her first self-care skill would be to take a bottle and demonstrate a coordinated sucking-breathing-swallowing drinking pattern. For young toddlers, their self-care skills can be expanded into the areas of removing their clothes, attempting to put socks on, eating a diversity of food and using utensils for meals. Most toddlers show interest and naturally pick up self-care activities as they take place repeatedly throughout their days. However, if the toddler does not do it, it is time to consult with the professionals.
